About Nancy Navarro
Current Role
as a Member of the MCPS Board of Education
Mrs. Nancy Navarro was appointed by the Montgomery County Public
School’s Board of Education in October 2004 to fill the term
of the vacant District 5 seat. Since her appointment, Nancy has
focused her efforts on Kindergarten-readiness, advancing the achievement
of the county’s neediest students, strengthening parent engagement,
and increasing BOE accountability to its stakeholders. Nancy is
running for election to the BOE in 2006.
Nancy is currently chair of the BOE Communications and Public Engagement
Committee. She is a member of the BOE's Strategic Planning Committee,
and the Research and Evaluation Committee.
Community Leadership Activities
Nancy is member of the Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers, Advisory
Board; and member of the Montgomery County Gang Task Force, Community
Action Task Group; she is also member of the Board of directors
of Non-Profit Village, a community development project in Silver
Spring. She has served in a number of volunteer leadership roles,
including
- Co-president of the White Oak Middle School PTSA (2003-2004)
- Co-chair of the Long Branch Revitalization Task Force, "Youth,
Schools, and Child Care" workgroup (2002-2004)
- Judge, MAGNA Awards, National Association of School Board Members
(2005)
- Member, Montgomery County “Early Childhood” Public
Engagement Campaign (2001-2004)
- Co-Chair, Early Childhood Services Task Force on Quality Child
Care in Immigrant Communities (2002-2003)
- Bilingual classroom parent volunteer at Rock Creek Forest Elementary
School.
Awards and Achievements
Nancy is the recipient of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery
County Leadership Award and the Maryland State Department of Education
“Women Who Dare” Leadership Award, among other recognitions.
She is a graduate of the IMPACT Silver Spring Empowerment program.
Background
Nancy has resided in Montgomery County for 14 years. She was born
in Caracas, Venezuela, and is a 1987 graduate of the University
of Missouri-Columbia. Her degree is in psychology.
In 1998, Nancy co-founded Centro Familia, a nonprofit, community-based
organization whose mission is to assist the economic and educational
development of Latino and other immigrant communities in Montgomery
County. She co-directed the program for six years. Centro Familia’s
goals include school readiness, healthy family development, and
leadership development.
She and her husband live in Colesville. They have two daughters
who attend Montgomery County Public Schools.
